How We Calculate
The calculation estimates environmental impact based on several factors:
- Energy Consumption: Estimated kWh per query for the selected LLM multiplied by the total weekly queries and number of users, then extrapolated monthly/annually.
- Carbon Emissions: Total energy consumption multiplied by the carbon intensity (kg CO₂/kWh) of the selected region's electricity grid.
- Water Usage: Based on the estimated water consumption per kWh of energy used in data centers (approx. 1.8 Liters/kWh).
- Equivalents: Calculated using standard conversion factors (e.g., average car emissions per mile, average tree carbon absorption per year).
Calculation Limitations
This calculator provides estimates. Actual impact can vary due to:
- Model Efficiency Data: kWh/query figures are estimates based on available research and may vary.
- Carbon Intensity Data: Regional values are averages and fluctuate based on the real-time energy mix.
- Hardware & Infrastructure: Does not account for the specific efficiency of the data centers or user hardware.
- Usage Patterns: Assumes consistent average usage.
- Embodied Carbon: Does not include the carbon footprint of manufacturing hardware.
